Equinix: Redefining the Future of Payments with Interconnection

Digital innovation and the evolving regulatory landscape have affected the traditional payment market significantly in the past few years, creating new revenue streams and changing the way merchants, consumers, and businesses interact. Consequently, the banks and financial institutions have been working to rearchitect their payment infrastructure to attain speed, security, and global reach to deliver the user experience that customers demand today. A company that plays a leading role in enabling organizations to address these challenges is Equinix, a California-based global interconnection and data center company that has pioneered the use of interconnection to address these challenges.

Equinix appropriately addresses the most critical challenges faced by its clients when integrating with a new partner or leveraging new technology to evolve its payments platform owing to legacy infrastructure. Further, as new regulatory requirements continue to change data sovereignty, access and data privacy globally, it becomes even more difficult for service providers to build their own infrastructure at the edge. Digital payments require a huge amount of real-time collaboration across mobile networks, banks, retailers and fraud protection services – this is a complex process with many moving parts. Interconnecting all these moving parts within the walls of an Equinix data center means partners can all work together seamlessly whether their data is stored on site or in the cloud, to provide real-time payment solutions. “Equinix is the platform for many businesses to build their digital edge infrastructure where they can deliver their digital payments and banking services more efficiently, reliably and securely,” adds Mary McHale, Business Development Director, Financial Services, Asia-Pacific, Equinix. “Our platform facilitates collaboration with new partners and enables businesses to deploy a consistent user experience globally.”

The company’s platform of more than 200 data centers across five continents allows direct and secure access to public and private clouds globally.

Equinix is the destination platform for many businesses to build their digital edge infrastructure where they can deliver their digital payments and banking services more efficiently, reliably, and securely. We support the future of payments that are instant, open and everywhere

“We provide access to all of the major clouds globally, and it’s not just the access, but private interconnection that makes the movement of data in and out of the cloud more secure and reliable. This allows us to create a secure route for our customers’ data to move in and out of those cloud platforms easily,” says Mary. Another capability that makes Equinix stand out is the geographic reach and flexibility of the company’s data centers that enable businesses to house their e-commerce systems closer to partners and end users for greater responsiveness—a benefit that is unique to Equinix. With the world’s most connected data centers in 55 markets across five continents, Equinix allows its clients to offer uninterrupted, secure, and reliable payment solutions to their customers.

Digital payments require real-time collaboration across mobile networks, banks, retailers, card associations, fraud and a number of other service providers. “Equinix is the platform for many businesses to build their digital edge infrastructure where they can deliver their digital payments and banking services more efficiently, reliably, and securely,” adds Mary. “It facilitates collaboration with new partners and enables businesses to deploy a consistent user experience globally.”

To elaborate on the way Equinix has been addressing its clients’ challenges, Mary talks about the company’s association with iZettle, a Stockholm-based PayPal service firm that offers businesses an easy way to make payments on mobile devices. They struggled with catering to the needs of clients in all their markets with a single data center in Europe. iZettle decided to run its digital payment services on AWS cloud to improve time to market and partnered with Equinix to implement a hybrid cloud strategy. This deployment allowed iZettle to reduce its average latency by just over 25 percent. Their network’s proximity to clients also reduced transaction times significantly. According to Daniel Bernholc, the chief technology officer at iZettle, Equinix’s ability to make iZettle’s servers up and running within a month proved critical for the latter. Such a demonstration of responsiveness and data center expertise gave the client the confidence that Equinix is the right partner to help them expand beyond their current deployments.

Abiding by its vision to continuously improve the platform, the company has taken a step by expanding its Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric (ECX Fabric) to include the inter-regional interconnection between data centers, allowing global interconnection as a service. Equinix has also announced Network Edge services to help businesses set up virtual network services remotely. This will enable businesses to enter new markets quickly, build a digital edge infrastructure virtually without CAPEX, and access the local ecosystems with better performance at a lower risk.
